Bond County – A Brief History

Before Illinois became a territory in 1809, the first settlers arrived in Bond County in 1806. This family was the Reeves family and they were followed shortly by the Greene family. The first “community” was Jones’ Fort built before 1808. It was later renamed Greene’s Fort. Hill’s Fort was established around 1811 by Samuel Hill. It was established as the county seat for four months until a sight near Hurricane Creek, know as Perrysville, was chosen for the permanent seat. This was also the sight of the first election in Bond County.

The museum for famed sculptor Richard Bock is located in Greenville.  A fascinating experience.  For information, visit the Bock website.

A comprehensive collection of memorabilia showcasing many businesses in Greenville through the years.  The museum is located in the back of the Rainbow House.

Hoiles-Davis Museum
The Bond County Historical Society opened this new museum in 1999.  It has materials detailing the history of Bond County including a nice Civil War collection.

One Room School
The Bond County Retired Teachers Association restored this beautiful One Room School.  The museum is located on the Jr. High grounds.

It sure is easy to get to Greenville, Illinois! Greenville is located on Interstate 70, just 45 miles east of St. Louis. Arriving on Interstate 70, get off at exit 45 and go north on Rt. 127 for two miles and you are in downtown Greenville!
